Shackleton wrote it in 1913(ish), for the Nimrod expedition. HE got 5,000 responses. I'm not quite as popular. It may be hoax however, there's a bit of a debate, as no one has managed to locate the original newspaper it was published in. The first copy that's been found is in a 1948 book "The 100 Greatest Advertisements"- so some people think that author made it up. I hope it's true, I like it.
