i have one of these fucking things in my house. it runs every hour AND every half hour. i would like to one day blow this mothafucka up, but cannot as apparently "it's an antique."

Can't you just forget to wind it? Antiques should be seen and not heard.
someone else in the house LIKES to hear it, so no go on the "forgetting" to wind the bastard.
